Two Tips For Caring For Your Car's Grille

Blog

When it comes to maintaining your car, it can be easy to overlook some of the steps that are involved with this process. In particular, it can be common for individuals to fail to maintain car grilles. While this part of the vehicle may seem relatively insignificant, it can lead to a number of performance issues, but you will be able to minimize these issues through the use of a couple of simple maintenance tips.

Clean The Grille Regularly

Cleaning the grille is one of the most basic and important forms of maintenance that you can do for it. Over the course of time, debris can become stuck to the grille. As these accumulations grow, they will gradually reduce the airflow. When this occurs, the engine may be more prone to overheating. This can lower the overall performance of your car while also placing it at a higher risk of suffering serious wear and tear.

By thoroughly cleaning the grille, you can avoid these problems. To ensure that you remove all of the dirt, dust, and debris from this part of the car, you should consider vacuuming it first as this will remove many of the larger pieces of debris as well as much of the dirt and dust. Once you have vacuumed the grille, you should apply an automatic safe cleaning solution to the grille before thoroughly rinsing it with a power jet of water from a hose or pressure washer.

Straighten Any Bent Fins

After you have cleaned your car, you should closely examine the small metal fins. These fins are designed to help filter out much of the dust and dirt that will strike the front of the vehicle while it is in driving down the road. Unfortunately, these impacts can cause some of these fins to become bent. When this occurs, it can significantly reduce the amount of air flowing into the engine.

While you might be worried about needing to replace your grille, you may be able to repair this damage by using a fin comb. These combs are designed to gently straighten out bent fins without worsening the damage. You will be able to purchase these combs from most auto repair stores. When using these tools, make sure that you move them with a slow and steady force. This will reduce the need to make additional passes over the bent fins as well as mitigate the risk of breaking or otherwise harming the fins.
